Hey guys and welcome back to The Faith Filled Friends. Tonight, we have a special treat for all of you. One week ago we celebrated our second birthday and as we reflected on it we decided to write a team devotion to emphasise the importance of a life lived for Jesus. Let’s dive into it!
Only Jesus- Casting Crowns
‘…Make it count, leave a mark, build a name for yourself
Dream your dreams, chase your heart, above all else
Make a name the world remembers
But all an empty world can sell is empty dreams
I got lost in the lie that it was up to me
To make a name the world remembers
But Jesus is the only name to remember…’
We like to think we’re important, that we hold significance in the world. We try and buy the grandest houses, the fastest cars and the fanciest clothes to make sure we stand out from the crowd.
All of those things might allow us some temporary fame, but eventually we will die. It is something none of us can avoid. One day, we will no longer exist on this earth. When that time comes, how do you want to be remembered? In fact, should we even want to be remembered?
If anything, we want to be remembered for the good things we have done and how we have impacted the lives of others, but “Only Jesus” challenges us not leave a legacy of ourselves, but rather a legacy of Jesus.
That is what really matters. As we reflected on our birthday and the “We Need Jesus” series we came back to this. That only Jesus is important.
‘…And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
You see, as followers of Jesus, we no longer live for ourselves, but we live for Him because He died to give us life when we were dead in our sins.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
As Christians, we should only care that people know and remember Jesus after we have gone. It is a humbling thought, because it reminds us that everything is really all about Him and not about us at all!
If people can look back on our lives and see Jesus and His love in the way we lived, then that’s all that matters. That is the greatest accomplishment, to be able to see the people around you discover Jesus. Our lives are not our own because Jesus bought them when He died on the cross in our place.
Our achievements ultimately will mean nothing, but a life lived for Jesus, pointing others to Him and The Gospel, that is a life well lived. It is a life that doesn’t make a difference for some mere eighty years but instead it effects eternity.
We shouldn’t live to leave our own legacy, but instead live to leave a legacy of Jesus, because we should seek to live our lives for Him, to give Him praise and honour in all we do.
He deserves all the glory and honour, because of all He’s done, securing our freedom and a hope that can never spoil or fade.
Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
‘…Jesus is the only name, Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name to remember, ooh
Jesus is the only name, Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name to remember…’
We don’t want people to remember us, we want the to remember- only Jesus.
So thank you for reading this devotion. We can’t stress the importance that a life lived for Jesus is. Time is a gift from God to be able to make a difference in this world. Use it wisely, make sure it shines Only Jesus!
‘…I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
