Pain and Sin

Throwback Thursday

Hey guys and welcome back to The Faith Filled Friends. It is a Throwback Thursday devotion today, which means we get to look at a passage of scripture from the bible that we have covered previously. Today, I read this passage of scripture and a new revelation hit me. Let’s dive into it!

Throwback Thursday

Job 1:13-22
“One day when Jobʼs sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brotherʼs house, a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!” While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brotherʼs house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my motherʼs womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

What a God fearing man! Job lost everything. Literally everything, and what’s the first thing that he does? He worships God!

I have always found it amazing that Job could face such pain and suffering yet still find joy in God. He has always been a role model for me, the way he loved God through everything. But when I read this passage today something new stood out…

‭‭Job‬ ‭1:22‬
“In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

Job never sinned in the pain. That actually really hit me. Finding joy in the midst of pain is hard but to not sin… That is so much harder.

I am considered a bit of a control freak and mildly OCD. If you move some of my stuff out of its place I can get pretty crazy. If someone moves my pillows or my CD’s or leaves a CD out of it’s case, I can get pretty angry.

My younger brother is learning to drive in my car and that is perfectly find with me. But the other day he walked in and told me that I have one less mirror on my car. I got so annoyed by that, and I was pretty angry. We have to be quick to forgive but anger does not produce the righteous fruit of God.

We can get upset or sad or even angry, but we must not sin in those moments. Those moments will challenge us and we can learn to grow, but we don’t have to give into the sin.

The story of Job is sad and beautiful. We learn so much about how to face pain and suffering. In the end, let us remember that God has blessed us with everything. When we have nothing, we still have God! He is the one thing we can’t lose.

‭‭James‬ ‭1:19-21‬
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.”

God Bless

  1. What a great message this is as well as a challenge to all of us. Although I’ve read this passage several times, it always amazes me that although Job literally loses everything He has; his family, his animals and his servants, he doesn’t curse or blame God, He praises Him because He knows that God is in control.

Like you said, it is difficult not to sin in our pain because we are weak. It’s only with God’s help that we can overcome the sin.

When we praise God in the midst of our struggles and pain and don’t give into the sin that causes us to lose our temper… as hard as that is… we bring glory to God and shine Jesus in our lives.

    Thanks Gad!

    • Amen!

When we are weak He is strong. In the moments when it feels like we have nothing left, God is stronger than ever, cheering us on.

Like you said, it is very hard to not blame God and sin in those moments, but that’s what we have to do. It is our challenge, we need to go all in, giving Him everything we’ve got. We need to surrender our whole heart.
