Hey guys and welcome back to The Faith Filled Friends. We are so glad that you have joined us today as we devote time to God. Today we want to discuss the topic of pride. Pride is a big thing in our lives and it is important that we don’t let it consume us. Let’s dive into it!
Death Of Me- Royal Tailor
Pride: a quality in a person that displays an inflated sense of ones’s own worth or personal status. Typically making them feel superior or above others.
Does that sound like you? If you said no… We’ll it might just be you!
The hardest thing about pride is that we don’t see our own faults. We become self righteous and think we are somewhat perfect or at least above others.
Why pride? Well, I have been thinking about pride a lot recently due to a few things and I really believe we need to discuss it. In my connect group we brought up pride and what it does in us. It is so true that we all have a sense of pride in our lives, and the bad pride.
I look at myself and I know that I sometimes won’t accept that I am wrong when it is pretty clear. I judge others, my church and also songs! I can find myself in church just criticising everything. I have my opinion and if the person preaching disagrees with me, they just lost me because I will think that they are wrong. Worship songs are another point. I can listen to the words of some worship songs (it is kind of my job and hobby) and criticise it. I can find reason why it is not real worship and I don’t raise my hands.
I know this sounds weird and bizarre but it is the truth. It sounds worst than it probably is but I would rather lay it all down with no pride. We all have Pride and self righteousness in our lives as we think we are our own gods. There is only one God and He is the only one who can take away the pride.
‘…I heard one day,
You came, and turned the lost into the saved
Now you’re showing me the way
All along I’ve been believing, I was living…
…But, now that I’m free
I finally see, living’s worth dying for
Buried with you, you’re making me new
The old me’s dead and gone
This is the DEATH OF ME…’
We need to die to ourselves. When we remember that we are not perfect and that God had to die for us to save us from death it is amazing and very humbling. All the sins that you carry, whether it is pride or any other sin on the list, you need to lay them down at the cross.
When you and I accept that it is not by works but by grace that we are saved, we can finally see that we need to lay it down. And it is hard to accept that we aren’t worth it or that God is right and we don’t need to prove our love for Him. But we need to remember that pride doesn’t want us to surrender to God. It shouts in our head, “You are better than that. You need to earn it. Everyone is wrong and I am right. Why do I need to die, I am good, right?”
Now to quote Tenth Avenue North from the great song, “Losing”.
‘…But pride won’t let us lay our weapons on the ground
We build our bridges up but just to burn them down…’
“In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord. In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.”
Pride kills us. It keeps us from pursuing God and all that He has for us. We NEED to die to our sin and our old ways. Pride needs to fall once and for all.
‘…No more holding onto all my secrets
No more living with these broken pieces
Now my life’s been changed
Today is a new day,
And I’ll never be the same
No, No, No…’
“To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”
I hate pride and arrogance! What about you? Are you sick of pride getting the best of you and the ones you love? I know that it is time we surrender and find true life in the death of ourselves.
