Clear the Stage

Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before me

Hey everyone and welcome to another devotion on the Faith Filled Friends. I have a great song from Jimmy Needham for you tonight called ‘Clear the Stage’. All of us live busy and hectic lives with all of our commitments, hobbies and interests. With all of  these things going on, God can easily be pushed to second place in our lives.

‘…Anything I put before my God is an idol
Anything I want with all my heart is an idol
Anything I can’t stop thinking of is an idol
Anything that I give all my love is an idol

What must we do in our lives to devote time to God, are there things we have to say “no” to in order to say “yes” to Jesus? If we put all of our commitments and social activities ahead of Jesus, then what does it say about our relationship with Him? When we put things in our lives ahead of Jesus, they become idols. We cannot serve multiple gods, but only the one true God. Family, friends, University, work and hobbies- none of them should be greater than God. Are you too busy to go to church on Sundays because of sport? Is sport an idol? Now it is important to remember that going to church isn’t something that will save us, only faith in Jesus and what He has done is going to save us. However, it is going to be hard to grow in your faith and encourage other Christians in their faith if you don’t attend church because of other commitments.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

Jesus is our number one above all else. Life is busy and demanding, but we need to make sure we set aside time for Jesus, not just on Sundays but everyday! Whether it be time in prayer, reading the bible, listening to some Christian music/worship or reading one of our devotions, I encourage you to set aside time each day for Jesus. When we put God first, everything else will follow.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well

Colossians 3:1-5 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry

We must not worship something that’s not even worth it
Clear the stage, make some space for the one who deserves it

If God is number one in our lives, what must we do to stop other things from taking His place? We have to keep making God a priority in life and remember not to worship worldly things that, in the end will all fade away. God will never fade away, He is eternal! Clear away the things that are crowding out God and put Him first. Jesus gave His life for us, He died for our sins so that we don’t have to face the punishment we deserve. He has given us the gift of eternal life with Him. What did it cost us? Nothing. God has saved us because of his amazing love. God is deserving of everything we have, don’t let anything else take away your devotion to God.

1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

We are children of God because of what Jesus has done for us. We belong to Him alone, not to anything else in this world.

I pray you will keep us from putting anything else in your place Lord. Help us to live our lives for you alone, seeking you first, before everything else. May we live for you alone. In your name I pray, Amen.

God Bless,

Josh Clarke- The Faith Filled Friends

  1. Wow, what a great devotion. And this is not favouritism.

I was going to “quickly” read your devotion before bed and listen to the song in the morning when I had time. But after I read those lyrics, ‘…Anything I put before my God is an idol…’ I couldn’t just skip the song and make this quick!

Man, I feel challenged. I can so often put time as a god, an idol. I will make my devotion time short because I have “other stuff to do”.

This is one fantastic devotions. Definitely the best I have read in a long time! I feel so encouraged and challenged.

Thanks so much for this devotion. You have done an amazing job. Thanks for giving up your time to encourage me and everyone else. And it was a fantastic song! What beautiful lyrics.

    Thanks once again Josh!

    God Bless

  2. I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the song Gad! When I wrote the devotion, I was thinking I wanted to do a Jimmy Needham song, but I wasn’t sure which one. Then, I listened to ‘Clear the Stage’ and the lyrics really spoke to me and shone out.

Things in our life can easily become idols as they demand more of our time and attention, but we must always remind ourselves that God is number one! There is nothing in life more important than Him.

It is a challenge to all of us to put God first in all we do.

Thanks so much Gad! I appreciate your encouragement and it it’s great that we can encourage one another in our journey of faith.

The lyrics are beautiful, Jimmy Needham’s songs always point straight back to the scriptures.

    God Bless.
