Sunday Sessions: Identity

Who are you?

Really think about who you are. What makes you, you?

Do you find your Identity in things? Do you need the latest craze or the newest thing to feel loved? Is money something that defines you? Does your car or your job or house make you feel like who you are?

Are you defined by feelings or status? Are you focused on popularity, do you need peoples praise or approval to feel loved and to feel whole?

Or do you find yourself, in those around you? Are you defined by your boyfriend or girlfriend. Your husband or your wife. Do you find your identity in your friends.

What makes you, you? This is what we will explore today. Your IDENTITY.

Hey and welcome to The Faith Filled Friends. We are a team of friends who love Jesus, Christian music and sharing the word of God. We cover many topics from; pain & suffering, to forgiveness, boldness, grace, worry and doubt. Today we will be exploring what your IDENTITY is. We will also be discussing Colton Dixon’s latest album, “Identity”. So let’s get started.

Identity- Colton Dixon

‘…We won’t be told who we are
By the nation or the stars
We won’t believe in all the lies
We know the truth inside

…Won’t question how we’re made
No, it wasn’t a mistake
And it’s not up for debate…’

The world will try and tell us who we are and who we should be, but it is not their decision. Who we are is defined by us; our values, our actions, our choices. That is what makes us, us! But is that your IDENTITY?

What does identity mean? One definition is this, “the condition of being oneself or itself, and not another.” I really love that definition. Being oneself. It is quite beautiful.

We often look at Hollywood or at magazines to find our identity. We place our identity in our friends or the people around us. These are terrible places to place your identity because they are full of lies.

Only the most beautiful people are featured in movies and on magazine covers. If we look to these places we will be mislead and end up becoming something else. You chose who you want to be by looking to these places and believing the lies, but I still do not believe that is your identity… it is not who you really are.

‘…We are the chosen
We are royalty
We are Your children
You set us free
You alone are my identity…’

I believe that our IDENTITY can only be found in Jesus Christ. He knows us better than we know ourselves. Deep down we know there is more for us, we are not completely whole. And that is why there is so much hurt and sadness in the world. People are lost, chasing things that make them feel alive. Things that give temporary joy but never truly satisfy.

We don’t know who we are if we don’t know Jesus. The bible tells us this.

Psalm 139:13- “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Jeremiah 1:5- “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Jesus made us and loved us. It is clear that we are found in Jesus and our IDENTITY can only be found in Him. Let go of the masks that you wear to gain approval. Jesus has called you unique and set you apart. He is not counting your cents, your friends or your mistakes. You are loved.

The more time you spend with God, the more you will become what He made you to be. You will find your IDENTITY in Him. And that is one of the greatest things that you can learn, who Jesus called you to be.

Romans 8:27-29~ “He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him.”

Colton Dixon takes us on an epic journey in this album. It is a lot of fun but more importantly it teaches us about our IDENTITY and God’s love. The deluxe version of this album is fantastic and is a must get. It explores THE MIND, THE BODY and THE SPIRIT. Who you are is an important journey and it is captured within this album, with upbeat melodies, catchy tunes and poignant lyrics.

The album is broken into the three sections which each begin with an instrumental which includes scripture being read. These are fantastic pieces of music and really capture the albums flavor. Just from this song, “Identity” and the single, “All That Matters” you can tell that it is a great album.

I had a great time with this album and it is probably my favourite album of the year (so far). I would highly recommend the album. It is definitely a solid 4.5! Check it out, I am sure you’ll love it.

Thank you so much for joining us today. I really hope you enjoyed this devotion and the quick album review at the end. I didn’t want to spoil too much over the album. I hope you have a great rest of the weekend. And remember…

Your IDENTITY is found in JESUS alone!

God Bless
