Good evening everyone. Today’s devotion will be more of a serious devotion as we will be touching on some, well, touchy subjects. So today’s devotion is based off the latest MercyMe single, “Even If”. So let’s dive into this juicy topic.
Even If- MercyMe
‘…They say sometimes you win some
Sometimes you lose some
And right now, right now I’m losing bad
I’ve stood on this stage night after night
Reminding the broken it’ll be alright
But right now, oh right now I just can’t…’
People say that life gives and takes, but no one likes it when we face rough patches. Sometimes it can be really hard to keep your faith when everything is falling apart. For all of you who are “Christians” and don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, it can be hard to understand a God of love. There is so much pain in the world, so much hate and sin. Where is God in the wars, where is God in those dark times and where is God when I am struggling for money.
It can be very hard to see a God of love when we live in a fallen world. But this world has been this way ever since Adam and Eve rebelled against God. As the stewards of the earth, we chose how to live and ever since we chose sin we have been forced to live in a world of sin. Jesus came to earth as the sacrifice to make all things right and fix the broken world. Death can’t hold us down anymore because Jesus defeated death once and for all.
‘…It’s easy to sing
When there’s nothing to bring me down
But what will I say
When I’m held to the flame
Like I am right now
…I know You’re able and I know You can
Save through the fire with Your mighty hand
But even if You don’t
My hope is You alone…’
It is hard when we know God is real and we have the faith to believe but we don’t see anything. We face hard times and we pray for a way out but nothing changes. We pray for miracles and all we get is disappointment. I have been there and I know. With unshakable faith, you still don’t see good.
All I can say is that it is in God’s plan. If He wanted to put out the fire for you or destroy temptation He could, but sometimes He doesn’t and that’s when we need to trust Him. Job is one of my favourite lads from the bible and a great example. Job faced trails, sickness and death, and He had no idea why. Job was a just, God fearing man, there was no reason for Him to suffer, but He did.
Sometimes our plans are outside of God’s (and by sometimes, we mean a lot!). We want instant gratification but God looks at the long gain. He knows what we make us stronger, what will grow us, we just have to trust Him, because we can’t see what the future holds.
‘…They say it only takes a little faith
To move a mountain
A little faith is all I have right now
But God, when You choose
To leave mountains unmovable
Give me the strength to be able to sing
It is well with my soul…’
It is hard to sing this beautiful song. There is so much truth. We love praising God when everything is going well, but when we feel weak, it is much harder to sing His praise. We will face unmovable mountains in our lives, because God has made them unmovable. That is when we need to sing to God. He does all things well and we pray that when we walk through fires we have God with us.
But it is not just mountains that we face but healing. Why doesn’t God heal me? I think Kutless should take this one!
Even If- Kutless
‘…Sometimes all we have to hold on to
Is what we know is true of who You are.
So when the heartache hits like a hurricane
That could never change who You are.
And we trust in who You are…’
Hard times come and go, but we know God is with us, we trust Him. But what about a miracle? Healing?! God loves me, so He should want to heal me, right?
Our youth group has focus on healing a lot recently and last night Andrew Kabala came and spoke. We saw legs grow and the Holy Spirit move! It was radical. But there was a boy, I saw Him go down for prayer after most of the youth had left. He was desperate for healing. The girls to his left and right collapsed as the Holy Spirit touched them… But he stayed there, unchanged.
He was so hungry, so ready for a miracle, but nothing happen. I have also had my fair share of disappointment when it comes to Jesus. I have believed and prayed for a miracle and nothing happens. I call these, “Faith Shakers” as they are dangerous for borderline Christians. I know I have cried out to God for burdens to be lifted and healing to flow… And nothing.
‘…Even if the healing doesn’t come
And life falls apart
And dreams are still undone
You are God You are good
Forever faithful One
Even if the healing
Even if the healing doesn’t come…’
Even if the healing doesn’t come. It is quite powerful. It is hard when life starts to fall apart. It is hard when things don’t go our way. It is hard when we don’t get healed. But let me tell you, that doesn’t change who God is!
God is never changing. He is faithful and He loves you and me more than anything. He is a good, good father. God is good all the time and His love never ends and it never fades.
I know a lot of us have put our faith and our hope in a miracle, but we need to trust God when we don’t see the miracle. His ways are far beyond our ways.
‘…Lord we know Your ways are not our ways
So we set our faith in who You are
Even though You reign high above us
You tenderly love us We know Your heart
And we rest in who You are…’
So if you are out there, your faith is shaking and you don’t know if God is even listening. I want you to remember that God never changes and no matter what, He loves you. You need to trust Him… Even If the healing doesn’t come.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your path straight.
‘…You’re still the Great and Mighty One
We trust You always
You’re working all things for our good
We’ll sing your praise…’
