The One Thing

One Thing

Hey guys and welcome back to another The Faith Filled Friends devotion. Today we will be looking at one of our favourite bands (they have so many devotion worthy songs), Tenth Avenue North. The song, “One Thing” is from their latest album, “Followers”. So, let’s jump in then!

One Thing- Tenth Avenue North

It’s really hard to pick a favourite song from the “Followers” album because every song is just so good. This song is definitely right up there! It is simply a beautiful song that reminds us what God has given us.

‘You don’t really know what you need
‘Til you’ve got nothing
You don’t really know what you believe
‘Til you’ve been broken
You don’t really know what you treasure now
‘Til it all comes crashing down
But I can see so clearly now…’

We spoke about Job recently, and he truly defines this song! He lost everything. Seriously, his family, his house, his animal, he had nothing left. But what did he do? He didn’t cry or complain. He went to God in worship! In the greatest tragedy of his life, he went to God and worshipped him for all he had.

Job 1:20-22
“At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my motherʼs womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

Wow is all I have to say! Job was an incredible God fearing man. I hear so many stories of lost and tragedy but then the person will blame God and walk away for the light. Job did something most people wouldn’t ever want to do. He worshipped God in the hard times. It is inspiring to read as it fills me with encouragement. I want to be a man that will worship God, no matter the circumstance.

‘…If I’ve got nothing but You
I still have everything I need
You’re the one thing I can’t lose
When I run to the end of me
Everything I thought I lost
I found it all in You, my God
You’re the one thing, one thing, one thing
One thing I need…’

When we face loss let’s be people that find all our joy and life in God. He is the one thing that we need. He is the one thing we can’t live without.

Psalm 55:22
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

God is there when we have worries and disappointment. He wants us to lean on Him and rely on His strength alone. It is like the sparrows.

Matthew 6:25
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”

Even the sparrow finds a home! God holds it all. We don’t need to worry about what we have if we have the Lord. He calls us priceless and perfect. Because of Jesus we can be called perfect. The blood of Christ is all we need, it sets us free and allows us to live in a relationship with God.

1 Peter 5:10
“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

We will face pain and loss on earth but if we remember the promises from God we will be set free. We need to let go of our grip on what we have and find life in Jesus. If things on earth give us JOY then our joy can be taken and destroyed, but JOY in Jesus will never be taken. Robbers on earth come to kill, steal and destroy. But if our life and our joy is in Jesus, then there is nothing that can hurt us.

Like Job, we need to place our lives and all we are in Jesus. We can’t lose our joy or our salvation in Christ. In the hard times we will worship God for our life which we have been blessed with. Everything else in our life is a miracle from a miracle! Life has been given and then our lives were bought!

Philippians 3:13
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,”

Let’s forget what is behind. Let’s forget what we lost and find everything in Jesus! He is our everything. He gives life and life to the full! Let’s find all we have in Jesus, not the things out the past and of this world.

‘…All of the wants and all the plans I’ve been chasing
All of the dreams in my heart, You can take them
‘Cause all of the beauty starts to fade in the light of just one face
I can see so clearly now…’

Everything we have we should give it all up to chase after Jesus. He alone is the one thing we need.

God Bless

This one thing I know
You alone will satisfy…’

    • Yeah He is! I’m lovin’ this song more and more recently.

It was the one that stood out the most when I first got the album but was always pushed aside by the big ones we all know (What You Want, Afriad, Overflow, I Have This Hope, Control!). I loved all the songs but this one has really stuck with me personally.
And now when I listened to “Followes” again, I couldn’t help but worship God with this song.

With my reading of Job and this song at the same time I knew that God was saying something. We did a whole “Hard Love” series (shameless self promotion) which was about all the challenges and trials we face in life, but this is our answer to that. This song, Job… Everything we have looked at is the answer.

Yes we face trials and we grow from them, but what must we do. That’s where “One Thing” comes in!

Okay thins is getting long so I’ll stop now!

      God Bless

  1. Fun fact!

If you paste Job 1:20-22 into Google, it displays the Scripture Saturday devotion!

    Try it out:

“At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my motherʼs womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”
