Good Evening everyone and welcome to your Sunday devotion! It’s great to be back again. Being a Sunday, I thought it would be good to cover some praise and worship. Tonight, I have some Hillsong for you with ‘Closer’. It’s a great song off their Glorious Ruins album, released in 2013. I heard this song the other day and it really stood out to me as a devotion song, so I hope you enjoy this one!

“Closer and closer, we want to know You, reaching out, reaching out, here in Your presence, we want to go deeper, in Your light, come alive…”

As Christians, we want to grow more in our understanding of God. We want to go deeper with Him and come to know Him better as our Lord and Saviour. The relationship we have with God is by no means a dead and static relationship, but rather a living and dynamic relationship, where we seek to come closer to God day by day. To have a relationship with God is an amazing privilege and to have access to the Lord who created all of heaven and earth is just awesome! The more we come to know God, the more we will become like Him, as we are continually transformed into who He wants us to be. God wants us to know Him more and to deepen our relationship with Him. That’s why reading God’s word and prayer is so important, because it helps us to know God more and come closer to Him. It’s not something we should feel obligated to do, but rather have a desire to do because we love God. May we have a desire and a hunger (as Jono said the other day) to know God more, to go deeper and into who He is.

Think about your best friend. The better you know and understand who they are, the more developed the relationship. It’s the same way with God. He wants to be our best friend. He wants us to grow more in His ways, through getting to know Him better. I pray we will get to know God for who He truly is. We are never going to know absolutely everything about God, because there is just so much to know, but let’s dig into God and get closer to Him. Through the Holy Spirit, we can continue to come closer to God when we come to Him in prayer and when we read His word.

Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.

“To You, we will come running,in You, we find belonging, Your love, is all that can satisfy…”

When we come to Jesus, we find true worth and satisfaction- something this world cannot and never will be able to offer. We are accepted for who we are. We don’t have to try and change because it is Jesus who will change us, from the inside out. It is the love of Jesus that will be enough. The love that sent Jesus to the cross to pay for our sins, is what should motivate us to draw close to God. To know the God who loves us and saves us is so great. If Jesus is the only one who can satisfy, by coming closer, the things of earth will begin to become less important when we fix our eyes on Him. So may we come close to God and continue to want to know Him more.

Philippians 3:8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.

Heavenly Father, I thank you that we can know you as our Lord and Saviour and know you personally. I pray you will fill us with a desire to grow more in our knowledge of you and become closer to you each day. May your Holy Spirit guide us to deepen our understanding of you as we pray and read your word. Nothing compares to knowing you Lord, everything in this world we can count as loss compared to knowing you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

God Bless,

Josh Clarke- The Faith Filled Friends

  1. It’s such a great song! It was actually on TV the other day!

I love the devotion. Thanks for sharing this message with us all!

Philippians 3:8 is great! Love it! I feel that God is really using that verse.

  2. It is a great song, when was it on TV? My pleasure Gad, glad you enjoyed the devotion 😉

I really love Philippians 3:8 too! It’s such a great reminder of the worth of knowing Jesus! From all the verses I included in the devotion, it was Philippians 3:8 that I kept going back to. Even on the train going into Uni the other day, I opened the devotion to read that verse again.
