Let There Be Light

Words

Scripture Saturday

Hey guys and welcome to today’s devotion. I have really felt a call to talk about words, and not just our own words, but God’s words. So, let’s jump in then!

In this devotion I will refer to a few songs and I am not sure if I will share them but we will see. But what better way to kick off this devotion than looking at God’s word.

Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

So what the heck does that mean? Sometimes we don’t understand God’s words but that’s when we need to study it and look into what He is saying to us. So this scripture is talking toys about our words and what we speak. If we choose to speak life, we will reap life. But if we choose to speak death… Yeah! So we have discussed this verse before, what is different? Nothing really. But we truly believe that we should use our words to build others up and not tear them down. It doesn’t only hurt them, but it hurts us to.

1 Peter 4:11- “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God”.

We all struggle with our words and this is something we must deal with. Think as if you were talking to God or your parents next time you speak death or slanderous talk. We are called children of God, so let’s stark acting like it. Speak God’s love and His life into people.

Like I have said before, let’s take up the “429 Challenge“. It is a Christian challenge based off the scripture in Ephesians. Thanks to the band, Building 429, this challenge has really spread to the world. And I believe we should all do this together. Let’s get some friends and do it in unity.

Ephesians ‭4:29‬
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

How it works is whenever someone says something negative, someone else says “429” and then the person who spoke death has to say a positive comment. Let’s be a generation of love and life! We can all stand up and be the light.

Now is the part when we start the “Scripture Saturday”. So let’s dive into the word.

Genesis 1:1-31

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.”
And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.”

Okay, so you probably think, ‘Gad’s off his nut?! Why is he doing the creation in a devotion about words?’ But I am getting there. So I don’t want you to skim read that, but rather I want you to read it out loud, every word! Every word is important.

So this week I have just read Genesis 1 over and over again. It sounds strange but God has really moved me to a place of worship through this chapter. What do we want? Money, fame, to prosper, to know God more… Wait? Yes, this is something that might sound strange, but imagine getting to know God. Like, really know Him! We know nothing of God, but imagine if you truly knew Him. It would be incredible!

We need to know God, not just this world He created. He is so much bigger and better than anything we have ever seen! But how do we get to know God?

Become a Sword Swallower!

You probably got a bit more confused but I will explain. Last night in prayer I felt God tell me to become a sword swallower, and I also said, “what?” Then it came to me.

Ephesians 6:17
“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

God’s word is a sword. We need to feed on His word daily, digging in and swallowing as much as we can. If we take in His word, we can speak it. The sword goes in and the sword comes out. It is a funny analogy but I will never forget the picture God showed me.

Let’s start getting into His word more and more. If we swallow His word, then we can speak life and hope to the ones around us.

1 Peter 4:11- “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God”.

God’s words mean so much to us! They are the very things that brought us to life. God has bestowed us this power as well. Remember the story of the dry bones? Well let’s have a refresher anyway.

Ezekiel 37:4-6
Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

God says, our words have the power of life and death. We have to choose what we want to us them for. To bring life or cause death.

So why did I share Genesis 1 with you all? Well, it highlights the divine power of Gods words. “Let there be Light,” and there was light. God is far bigger than we could ever imagine and His power knows no limits. But His words are love and His words are life!

God has created everything with His breath, His words. He is amazing and what can I do but stand in awe of him. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at six in the morning, I climbed a small hill and watched the sun rise. I read Genesis 1 and reminded myself who God really is. I reminded myself how great His love is, it has no ends. I worshiped Him, the Starmaker! He reigns over all the earth!

We can lift up our words and worship him, our God, our Lord and saviour. No matter what you are going through you can still praise God. To be honest, I was in a period where I wasn’t feeling God or hearing from Him. I found it hard to read my bible and spend time with God. But I didn’t give up, because we know our God is good and our God is near. And I found myself in tears as His spirit moved. I said, “I missed you!” I know it sounds soppy but when we feel like life is getting stale, we find it harder to get close to God and we start to miss His loving touch.

Genesis 1:31
And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.”

God is high above it all. And our only desire is to get to know Him. We wait for God’s word to bring our hearts to life! Words are the fabric of the universe (that reminds me of another thing!). Let God’s words be your words. Let’s live in the light of our Lord! Speak life and eat life. God’s words bring dry bones back to life. So let’s speak God’s words!

One Word- Newsboys

It’s an incredible song with some of the most beautiful lyrics that I have heard in a long time! God’s words are love, God’s words bring light!

And one more song to go with the theme of Let There Be Light!

  1. Note: These devotions are always done by the team, The Faith Filled Friends. But this devotion is based off a lot of my experience. So if you are struggling in so areas of your Christian walk, just let me know (The team is also always happy to help).

Sorry that it is really long. It has been brewing up inside me for far too long. And I didn’t want to make it a two part series so I apologise if it feels all over the place. Let There Be Light- Words- Genesis 1- 429- Fresh Oil- Speaking Life- Worship God for His mighty power… Yeah it feels like two devotions but I felt like it needed to be one… Except I didn’t plan it so I kept jumping from point to point.

I want to challenge us to all make some time for God this week. Get out into His creation and get to know God through worship, praise and prayer.

Also, grabs some friends and start the 429 Challenge! Yeah. It’s Your Boy, Building 429.

    Hope you enjoy!
