“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Good Evening my Faith Filled Friends… We have the power to bring life or cause death. It is crazy to think about it but it’s true. It’s not what we wear or how we act that makes a difference, but instead our words.
The tongue is a powerful muscle. It can be used to build people up, or tear them down. If we speak with love, building one another up, then we can truly shine the love of Christ. But negative comments or put downs can cause someone to slide down into death. I know it seems like a joke or maybe just fun to insult your friends, but that is more harmful than you could imagine. The death falls upon them and they can start believing the lies and slowly they slip away.
1 Peter 4:11- “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God”.
Josh and I just got back from a Christian University camp and it was incredible. The thing that changed me and impacted me the most was the people on the camp. Everyone was so full of love. The atmosphere was amazing as everyone had respect and everyone had love. I don’t know if I heard any smack talk or put downs. As Christians I believe we have to live our lives like this, being the change to the lost and the broken. Our words of life could bring them to life, Jesus!
If you would like a song for this devotion, search for “Favourite CCM” or “Words” and you should find the devotion, “Words- CCM” by Josh Clarke. It is an amazing devotion and the song is perfect for this theme (I think I need to read it again too!). But this isn’t the last you hear of this verse as it is an incredible verse that is pivotal in our lives as Christians.
And finally, let’s all try the “429 Challenge”. This is where Building 429 (a great band), got their name.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
How it works is whenever someone says something negative, someone else says “429” and then the person who spoke death has to say a positive comment. I reckon we should all do it. Tell some friends and family members (they might join you), and ask them to keep you accountable. Let’s be a generation of love and life!
