Top of the morning to you! Today’s Faith Filled Friends devotion is from Josh and it is my pleasure to be sharing with you once again. Today is Throwback Thursday! It’s the time of the week when we get to go back in time a little and look at some older Christian hits! I have to agree with the saying “it’s an oldie but a goodie”, because I feel that is certainly the case for today’s song.
“Livin’ For Jesus” is from Third Day’s 1995 album titled ‘Third Day’. It is a really catchy song with a good beat, yet it has a really important message in the lyrics. As Christians, we need to remember that the life we are living does not really belong to us. Our lives are God’s and we should seek to live for Him each and every day.
Acts 17:28- “For in Him we live and move and have our being”.
It can be very easy to become consumed in our own lives and pursuits, causing Jesus to be put in second place when He should be our number one! We need to remind ourselves to live for Jesus. When we seek to live for Him, it is our way of responding to His grace for us, shown through Jesus’ death on the cross. Also, He created us. Jesus is the reason we are alive! He gives us the breathe in our lungs and each new day is a blessing from Him.
“Livin’ For Jesus” starts off with; ‘Sometimes things don’t work out quite the way you wanted them to, sometimes people don’t do all the things you wanted them to, there are times when the answers aren’t easy to see, sometimes we’re on a road, going back to a place we never wanted to be’.
This opening verse talks about just some of the difficulties that can come up in our lives; things not working out as we had originally planned them to, people not following through on their promises and letting you down and also being involves in situations where the solution is not easy to see. The common denominator of all these problems mentioned in the first verse is that they often occur when we try and live our lives with our own interests at heart. When this happens, we can often become stuck in a “rutt” of problems and it can be hard to get out of it. The world we live in is not perfect by any means and by trying to live for this world, we will constantly come into contact with these types of problems. It often prompts the question; “Who am I truly living for, Jesus or myself and this world”?
Turning back to Jesus and seeking to live for Him gives us a whole new perspective on these issues. We are called to take up our cross and die to ourselves (Matthew 16:24). By turning our attention to Jesus and away from the things of this world, we can put to death the things in life which hold us back from living completely for Jesus. I love what it says in the chorus. “Well that’s alright, I’m just fine, done made up my mind, that I’m livin’ for Jesus”. I just love how despite all these problems that are going on, the message of the chorus tells us that in the end, they really don’t matter all that much. In the end, the only thing that DOES matter is that we are living for Jesus. He is unshakable, perfect and will never fail us.
In the last verse, there is a focus on the amazing truth of living for Jesus, despite the circumstances we find ourselves in; “I turn to Jesus and ask Him for a brand new start, He’s the reason for my life, being something better and new”. No matter what we find ourselves in, if we feel we are living for ourselves and the things of this world, it’s never too late to turn to Jesus and ask Him for a brand new start, to start living for Jesus again. Whether we are young or old, today we must remind ourselves to live for Jesus. Our lives are His if we are trusting in Him. By seeking to live for Him, our lives can reflect the fact that we are living for something that is greater than ourselves, for Jesus. The more we seek to do this, the more we are transformed into His likeness, through the power of His Holy Spirit that is inside us.
This scripture sums up what it means to live for Jesus. Romans 14:8- “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord”. This verse talks about Living for Jesus, not just in this life, but also in death We are His no matter what. If we truly are living for Jesus, are we prepared to do whatever He asks of us because we belong to Him?
I pray today’s devotion is both and encouragement and a blessing to you. May we look to be ‘Livin’ For Jesus’ and to glorify him in everything, today and always. I hope you’ve also enjoyed the blast from the past from today’s ‘Throwback Thursday’ song. I encourage you to check out more of Third Day’s music if you’ve enjoyed what you heard today.
Prayer thought: “Heavenly Father, giver of life. Help me to commit to to living for you today and everyday. It is so easy to get distracted by the world around me and the problems it brings with it. I thank you that when we seek to live for you, all these worldly things fall away because you are so much greater. I also pray that I may live for you in response to the salvation you have freely offered to all those who believe. May my life be for you and you alone. In Jesus’ name I pray.
